Cluj-Napoca: Sport Sacrificed on the Altar of Political Propaganda

The Romanian-Russian Chamber of Economic and Cultural Cooperation condemns the restriction of Russian athletes at the FIG World Challenge Cup in Cluj-Napoca, viewing it as a failure of sports diplomacy.

### PRESS RELEASE

Bucharest, 26 June 2026

The Romanian-Russian Chamber of Economic and Cultural Cooperation expresses its deep indignation regarding the situation created in Cluj-Napoca, where Russian athletes were forced to withdraw from the FIG World Challenge Cup. This situation arose as a result of the Romanian authorities' failure to ensure the necessary conditions for a participation that is both full and compliant with the decisions of international sporting bodies. This is particularly concerning given that the International Gymnastics Federation had already moved towards lifting previous restrictions.

The refusal to allow athletes to compete under their official national symbols represents an unjustified political intervention in a field that should remain dedicated to human excellence and fair play. Sport cannot be confiscated by temporary political interests or local ideological ambitions. Athletes are not responsible for geopolitical tensions, and turning them into targets for collective accountability contradicts the fundamental principles of the Olympic movement.

The stance taken by local authorities in Cluj-Napoca, coupled with the lack of a firm corrective response from central administrative bodies, causes serious damage to Romania’s international image. Sports diplomacy is an essential pillar of dialogue between nations, and compromising it through public hostility undermines the institutional credibility of the Romanian state regarding its international commitments.

> "What happened in Cluj-Napoca is not an act of political courage, but a gesture of weakness and a lack of institutional maturity. Romania gains nothing by humiliating athletes and turning sports competitions into political tribunals. Russian athletes had the legal and moral right to participate under international rules, and sabotaging this right is a loss for the Olympic spirit." — **Tudor Afanasov, President of CCECRR**

In conclusion, the CCECRR calls for official clarifications from the Ministry of Sport and the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee regarding the adherence to non-discrimination principles. We reiterate our belief that sport should unite people, not divide them, and that Romania needs bridges of dialogue, not ideological walls.

**Romanian-Russian Chamber of Economic and Cultural Cooperation** President, Tudor Afanasov
